Consumer Warning:
When choosing a Martial Arts School beware of fraudulent claims made by some local schools offering Mixed Martial Arts and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu programs. Instructors should be able to easily prove without a doubt their experience and belt rank, from a credible source. Also, don't sell yourself short by being conned into signing up for just a "no-gi" program. Every top level jiu-jitsu fighter in MMA has mastered the "gi game". The school you chose should offer you training in both gi and no-gi fighting.
It has come to our attention, some school owners in Southern Maryland claim to be affiliated with us / trained with us / trained our instructors / or have a similar or better mixed martial arts program. Calvert MMA Academy is not affiliated with any other martial arts school in Southern Maryland. Calvert MMA Academy is the ONLY martial arts school in Southern Maryland to offer authentic Gracie Jiu-Jitsu, Muay Thai Boxing, Sanshou Kick Boxing, Olympic Judo, American Freestyle Wrestling, and Yoga under one roof. Students may choose to train in one or all programs at a price that is usually lower than memberships at other schools offering just one discipline of training.

Gracie Jiu-Jitsu vs. Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu:
Many ask what is the difference between Gracie Jiu-Jitsu (GJJ) and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ)? In Maryland there are a lot of martial arts schools offering BJJ programs, but few offer authentic Gracie Jiu-Jitsu. The major difference between BJJ and GJJ is "instruction methodology" and the "self-defense" aspect of the art. True Gracie Jiu-Jitsu offers more detail than generic BJJ when teaching techniques. So what does this mean to you the consumer? It means jiu-jitsu techniques will be more effective and easier to perform; physical strength and speed isn't emphasized, so anyone, regardless of age, size, conditioning, or gender can perform the techniques. GJJ also emphasizes self-defense above sports jiu-jitsu and MMA competitions. What good are the techniques you learn if you can't defend yourself in a street situation? Relson Gracie tells us if he had to chose between sport jiu-jitsu or Gracie Jiu-Jitsu's self defense techniques, he would choose "self-defense".
